چکیده

The role of geometrically necessary dislocations in providing macroscopic strengthening is reviewed with particle reinforcement as an example. The general relation between the Nye tensor and slip along a curvilinear slip line net is derived to emphasise the importance of curvature of slip lines upon the rate of dislocation storage. 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. A Thermodynamics Based Damage Mechanics Framework for Fatigue Analysis of Microelectronics Solder Joints with Size Effects

Experimental observations of an increase in resistance with decreasing specimen size and under the presence of non-uniform plastic deformation fields have pushed the development for small scale plasticity theories since the early 90’s. The observed phenomenon has been explained in terms of an accumulation of a density of geometrically necessary dislocations, which is required in order to accomm...

Surface effects and the size-dependent hardening and strengthening of nickel micropillars

We evaluate the extent to which two mechanisms contribute to the observed size effect of the ultimate yield strength of micropillars of diameters in the range of 1230 mm: dislocation pile-ups, modeled by means of a physically based non-local single-crystal plasticity model; and the short-range interaction of dislocations with the free surface of the micropillars, e.g., through the formation of ...

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of axially functionally graded beams by using finite element method

The aim of this paper is to investigate geometrically nonlinear static analysis of axially functionally graded cantilever beam subjected to transversal non follower load. The considered problem is solved by finite element method with total Lagrangian kinematic approach. The material properties of the beam vary along the longitudinal direction according to the power law function. The finite elem...

Estimating geometrically necessary dislocation content near grain boundaries in deformed <001> columnar aluminum

The minimum amount of geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) required to create crystallographic orientation gradients near the grain boundaries in a uniaxially deformed <001> columnar aluminum specimen is computed from local orientation measurements obtained using electron backscattered diffraction patterns (EBSD). Plots correlating GND density and orientation gradient are presented.

On dislocation-based artificial neural network modeling of flow stress

Computational design of materials processes has received great interests during the past few decades. Successful designs require accurate assessment of material properties, which can be influenced by the internal microstructure of materials. This work aim to develop a novel computational model based on dislocation structures to predict the flow stress properties of metallic materials. To create...
